1. THE Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) official party launch will take place on Saturday in Marikana, the North West, where 34 people were killed during industrial action by mineworkers seeking higher wages, the EFF said on Sunday.
2. SABC news reported EFF leader Julius Malema as saying: "We (the EFF) have chosen Marikana for simple reason because our people died in that place, fighting for economic freedom."
3. A 14-day period for individuals to lodge an objection with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to the EFF’s registration as a political party expired on Friday. The EFF had earlier given indication it would seek to officially launch on Saturday, the day after the first anniversary of Marikana massacre in which 34 mineworkers died.
4. EFF national spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said on Sunday the launch decision had been taken in a resolution at the EFF national assembly in July.
5. The "historic events at Marikana represents the failure of the 1994 social pact, a logical collapse, and (where it) died a natural death", he said.
6. Mr Ndlozi said the EFF the coming week would be spent in preparation for Saturday’s launch.
7. EFF leadership would go door-to-door in the North West handing out flyers and putting up posters to get "a huge reception" for the launch.
8. Mr Malema will give a key note address at the launch, while invitations would be extended to "continental organisations" to attend, he said.
9. Mr Malema had attended a commemoration rally on the massacre at Marikana on Friday along with Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) President Joseph Mathunjwa.
10. Neither the government nor the African National Congress (ANC) had representatives addressing the event, with the ANC in the North West saying on Thursday the commemoration was organised by "an illegitimate team called the ‘Marikana support group’ — a group which the ANC does not recognise".
11. On Friday, Mr Malema charged that "Lonmin and the ANC have killed our people".
12. He said it was impossible to talk peace when no one had yet taken responsibility for the massacre,
13. "Riah Phiyega is still the police commissioner, Nathi Mthethwa is still the minister (of police) and (Jacob) Zuma is still the president. Yet our brothers are dead," he said.
14. "Only in SA can 34 people be killed and no one takes responsibility".
